All Hail Apple’s App Store Hall of Fame

The App Store’s full of apps, thousands of them, but its still a little tricky sorting through them all, now Apple’s put together a new element to guide you to the most popular ones, the “App Store Hall of Fame”.

The Hall of Fame features the top fifty apps of all time, Apple says, describing these as the ‘best of the best’. The list includes both free and paid apps.

Top of the list? A title I downloaded the other day which I now see when I close my eyes. What is it? Angry Birds (don’t do it, it is seriously addictive.).

Go check the list people.

Skype 5 Beta released for Mac

Skype 5 Beta released for Mac

It is nice to see the Mac Version of Skype starting to gain feature parity with the Windows version.  But this looks totally different than any Skype I’ve ever seen.  It is all in one window and has the following new features:
  1. GRoup video calling – which allows you to make video calls with more than two people at a time as long as all participants are on the new Mac beta or Skype for Windows 5.0.
  2. New call control bar — Hang up, mute and more from a mini Skype toolbar that sits on top of any web pages, documents or photos you’ve got open
  3. Search chat content to easily navigate past conversations
  4. Offline IM so that you can send and receive instant messages even if the recipient is offline
  5. Personalise contacts via user profiles
  6. Quickly rejoin calls if your Internet connection fails momentarily
  7. Floating Contacts Monitor to see your online contacts and contact groups

Application is fully Unicode-compatible and can be integrated into Windows Explorer's context menu, so there is no problem to call it from anywhere in Explorer: right-click a file and select the "Universal Viewer" item. It can also be integrated into other popular file managers.
Generally, Universal Viewer is an application similar to Total Commander Lister. But comparing to Lister, it has the following highlights:
  • Built-in functions of several plugins: images, multimedia, webpages view
  • Support for multiple codepages: ANSI, OEM, EBCDIC, ISO etc.
  • Support for text converters for DOC, DOCX, ODT, PDF etc.
  • Support for user tools
  • Toolbar, status bar, other interface improvements
  • Auto-reloading of file on changing, "Follow tail" option
  • Displaying of line numbers
  • Displaying of non-printable characters
  • Combined Unicode/Hex mode (call Unicode mode twice)
  • Modern RegEx search library
  • Print preview
  • EXIF viewer
In the Lister plugins section you will find the list of rather good Lister plugins to use in conjunction with UV. These plugins are developed by 3rd parties and are not included into UV installation.
