WORLD PREMIERE FOR ALL-NEW MAZDA CX-5

Mazda Motor Corporation celebrated the world premiere of its all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show today (Tuesday 13 September).  The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology and the new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’.

Mazda CX-5 will go on sale in the UK next year, featuring all-new gasoline and diesel engines, all-new manual and automatic transmissions, plus an all-new bodyshell, new suspension and a choice of two- or four-wheel drive – evolving Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive attributes to a new and higher level.

The 4.5-metre long CX-5’s exterior design features bold styling – inspired by the rapid acceleration and turning achieved by animals like the cheetah – that simultaneously expresses SUV-like solidity and functionality with Mazda’s characteristic sense of vitality and agility.

Mazda CX-5 will be one of the lightest and most aerodynamic vehicles in its class (Cd 0.33), which contributes to its outstanding fuel economy and low CO₂ emissions.  Mazda’s engineers have focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV.  Each engine has a record-breaking compression ratio of 14:1 for ideal efficiency and each will feature Mazda’s fuel saving ‘i-stop’ system, now with a faster reacting control system.

The engine line-up for CX-5 will include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 direct-injection petrol engine (165ps/210Nm) and its SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine with a two-stage turbocharger available with two outputs 150ps/380Nm and 175ps/420Nm.

Targeted fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions for the CX-5 models with front-wheel drive and manual transmission are 47.1mpg / 139g/km (petrol) and 62.8mpg / 119g/km for the 150ps diesel.  The diesel engines meet Euro 6 emissions standards without the need for an expensive NOx after-treatment system.

Measuring 4,540mm long, 1,840mm wide and 1,670mm high with a 2,700mm wheelbase, CX-5 will have generous front legroom, class-leading 997mm rear legroom and a cavernous boot (500 litres with the rear seats upright).  Easy-to-use Karakuri functionality features the world’s first 40/20/40 split independent rear seats.  The spacious driver-oriented cabin, together with higher quality trim, improved ergonomics, enhanced equipment and lower noise levels, ensures an enjoyable and rewarding driving experience.

IAA 2011: European Debut for the 2012 Mazda3 Facelift

Making its European debut alongside the all-new CX-5 compact crossover in Frankfurt is the facelift version of the Mazda3.

The updated C-segment model, which is available in both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback derivatives, features some minor cosmetic touches in the form of a reworked front end with a different bumper and grille design, new alloy wheels and a restyled rear bumper.

All-New Mazda CX-5 Crossover Makes its World Premiere in Frankfurt

The main attraction at Mazda's stand at the in Frankfurt is the brand-new CX-5 compact crossover that will spearhead the automakers efforts against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Mazda says that the CX-5 is the first of a new generation of models that will adopt the new KODO design philosophy and the full suite of its SKYACTIV technologies.

Mazda Drops New Photos and Videos of CX-5 Compact Crossover

You've already had a quick sneak peek at the brand-new Mazda CX-5, but the Japanese automaker has published a new set of photos and videos of the small SUV while testing in Europe. While most images show the CX-5 in camouflage, we do get two new press pictures including a rear shot of the vehicle.

The new CX-5 replaces the Tribute, which itself was a rebadged Ford Escape, as Mazda tries to go against the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and the VW Tiguan in the small/compact SUV market with a more appropriate and modern proposal.

Mazda Exec Says New CX-5 will Reach U.S. Shores in Early 2012 with Prices Starting from Around $20k,

It won't be long before we get our first intimate taste of the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV at its world premiere in Frankfurt, but we now have some interesting news about the North American variant, courtesy of Hideaki Tanaka, manager of the CX-5 program.

During the first press test drive event of a pre-production model, Tanaka told Autonews that the CX-5 will arrive in the States early next year, adding that while Mazda has not finalized pricing and packaging, it will likely carry a base MSRP of around $20,000, close to $3,000 less than the larger CX-7 ($22,785 with delivery).

2011 Mazda6 / Atenza to Receive Mild Facelift?

A single brochure photo of what is said to be the faclifted JDM Mazda6, or as it's known in its home market, the Atenza, has been making the rounds on the internet today.

Being the investigative types that we are, we dug a bit deeper and discovered five more scanned leaflets that include photos of the available aero parts and packages from Mazda and its tuning partners circulating on various Japanese sites.

Unfortunately, we can't say with certainty if these photos actually show the facelifted version of the JDM Mazda6 or not, but from what we can tell, the Atenza pictured here features a different nose with a new bumper incorporating a more smiley-shaped lower grille and more pronounced air inlets on both corners.

If the facelift turns out to be real, it's almost certain that the Mazda6 / Atenza will be offered with the firm's newly-developed SKY-G 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with direct-injection and SKY-G twin-turbocharged diesel units.

Mazda Working on Small Roadster Model Based on the Mazda2

The latest gossip from the Japanese front is that Mazda is working on a new two-seater roadster model based on the underpinnings of the current generation Mazda2 supermini (see gallery after the jump) which is sold in Japan as the Demio. If true, the roadster would fit right under the MX-5 / Miata in Mazda's sports car range competing in Europe against the likes of the forthcoming Renault Twingo CC, the Opel Tigra and the Peugeot 207 CC.

No word on the roadster's top, but we gather that a retractable metal roof is the most obvious choice for a model of this sort.

The proposed two-seater is said to use the same front-wheel drive layout as the Ford Fiesta-sized Mazda2 with power coming from a similar engine line-up that in Europe includes 1.3-and 1.5-liter gasoline units as well as 1.4- and 1.6-liter turbo diesels.

Japan's Best Car magazine also came up with a preliminary computer generated rendering of the proposed roadster model which looks quite interesting sans the quirky headlight arrangement.

And while we have no way of confirming the report from Best Car, we believe that a roadster version of the Mazda2 is not only plausible but it also makes sense for Mazda to add such a version in its range.
