The first pocket sized TV was produced by British inventor Sir Clive Sinclair way back in 1977.
But it wasn’t until 2005 and the advent of 3G that you could get TV on your mobile. Predictably enough, it was the high tech mecca of South Korea that led the way. But unless you live there or Japan, the likelihood is that you’re not yet glued to the TV in your pocket. That could all change in 2011. Here’s why.

More people watching
Recent research by Nielsen Wire found that, in the US, more people than ever are watching video on their mobile. The research company found that “While the number of people watching videos on their mobile phones remains relatively small compared to TV, they are increasingly using the devices to that end. On a year-to-year basis, the number of people watching mobile video increased more than 43%, while the amount of time spent doing so was up almost 7%.”
More broadcasters are getting involved
This year saw the formation of the Mobile Content Venture, which includes Fox, NBC and 10 other major broadcasters. Its aim is to pump out mobile TV content in the DTV format in a live way. This means that if you have a ready device, you’ll be able to tune into live TV content on the go without having to worry about data connectivity. The Mobile Content Venture plans to cover about 40% of the US by the end of next year. If it’s a hit there, it will only be a matter of time before European broadcasters get involved.
Bigger screens and more apps
One thing that has always held back mobile TV is the size of screens, but with the increase in smartphone screen size, this problem is now a thing of the past. Add to that the fact that there are more and more mobile TV streaming apps available, and it really looks like mobile TV is finally set to take off.

Hi Adobe. I know I’ve said some critical things about Flash, and I sure do miss the days when you and Macromedia seemed more focused on creative applications, but I do like this demonstration of a version of Photoshop running on an iPad.
Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch tool some time to show this new tool to Cnet recently. In the image above he’s mixing paings using the iPad as a palette, the iPad’s attached to a computer running Photoshop. He also showed some advanced Photoshop editing features running on an (cough) Android-powered Galaxy Tab.
“Back in the old days, people used to mix colors on a palette–a physical palette. We’re looking at whether we can bring that same type of experience to a tablet environment,” Lynch said. “What we’re working on is connecting your mobile devices to your personal computer over a network so that they can work in conjunction with each other,” Lynch said.
“As you can see, we’re trying some different design directions, making stand-alone imaging tools for tablets, as well as companions to Creative Suite apps,” writes Adobe’s John Nack on his blog.
When Steve Jobs was asked about watching TV on iPad in the future, he said he was doing that right now. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do the same thing?
According to Peter Kafka at Media Memo you can (at least at the moment) right now…if you don’t mind Los Angeles affiliates. A company called FilmOn is re-broadcasting TV from LA in iPad format. The quality is really good and the servers seem to be able to handle a load.

Both companies are being sued by the broadcasters who don’t want their advertisements to reach all of those people on mobile devices so this might not be a permanent thing. I’m looking forward to USC Football on Saturday so don’t crash it until then at least. kthx
