IAA 2011: New Hardcore Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale

One simple word at Lamborghini’s invitation to the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show should have given us a clue about the kind of car the Sant’ Agata manufacturer would unveil at this year’s IAA. SPY VIDEO: Lamborghini Testing Spider Version of RWD Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni

Looks like Lamborghini is working on the development of a topless version of its limited-run Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni special, which was named after the Italian company's most renowned test driver. The test mule was spied testing in and around the famous Nürburgring race track.

As with the coupe model, the Gallardo Spyder LP550-2 Valentino Balboni will ditch the standard Gallardo's four-wheel drive system for a lighter rear-wheel drive configuration, with power coming from a 5.2-liter V10 engine pushing out 550HP and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6500 rpm, hooked up to either a manual gearbox or an e-gear automated transmission with column-mounted shift paddles.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Photo Leakage: New RWD Model with 550HP?

Lamborghini LP550-2A set of allegedly official photos depicting a more hardcore version of the Lamborghini Gallardo supercar called LP550-2 were leaked into the web today. While we don't have any official information yet on the car from the Italian maker, Lamborghini's naming strategy suggests that the LP550-2 is equipped with a 550 horsepower version of the Gallardo's 5.2-liter V10 engine with power being driven to the rear wheels rather than to all four as on the rest of the Gallardo range.

If true, this means that the elimination of the all-wheel drive system will result in substantial (for this kind of vehicle) weight savings. We'll get back on this story as soon as we find out more. In the meantime enjoy the high-res picture gallery below.
