Google TV Introducing - watch details

At a conference in San Francisco earlier today, Google announced the advent of the rumored Google TV. According to The Wall Street Journal’s entertaining live blog of the event, it will function similarly to regular, non-Google TV, except it will make television and Web-browsing “a single experience.” The company “is going to focus on making it easier to search for programs you want to watch. You can search for your favorite programs, set your DVR to record programs in the future, and so forth.” Some televisions will have Google TV built in, but those that don’t can be hooked up to the device. (A cool bonus: users will be able to use Android phones as remotes.)

The New York Times adds, “Users can use their remote to drop down a ‘quick search box’ to search TV and the Web. Typing ‘msnbc’ in the search box gives you results from both live TV and the Web.” Product manager Rishi Chandra, the host of the presentation, said that Google TV will be “a national extension of the Web itself.” Google’s already posted a cheery, brightly colored introductory video on its YouTube channel, available for your viewing pleasure/hasty judgment.
